This week’s Match of the Week will break down two matches. On Friday, #16 BYU will host #5 San Diego and on Saturday, #2 Texas will host #6 Kansas. Both teams are number 1 and 2 in their conferences. BYU and Kansas both lost the first match against their opponents, but will now be the home team, so we will see if they can produce a different outcome. Below is the break down of these matches through our VolleyMetrics Rating Index:

                               screen-shot-2016-10-24-at-1-18-34-pm                                                                             screen-shot-2016-10-24-at-1-33-08-pm

Our predictions show that there will be two upsets this weekend. San Diego was able to defeat BYU in 3 games a few weeks ago, but our predictions show that BYU should get the win over San Diego. BYU performs better in every skill category, aside from passing. BYU is 11-1 at home right now, so they have been able to defend home court quite well this season.

The other matchup is between Texas and Kansas. Texas defeated Kansas 3-1 earlier in the season, but Kansas has not lost a game since the matchup. They are also riding a 6 game winning streak and are 9-0 at home. Our predictions show that this match is a toss-up, but Kansas barely has the edge against Texas 50.2-49.8. We will see how these matches turn out this weekend!

Analysis Shows an Increase of Serves Leads to a Higher Win Percentage

In the last few weeks, our statisticians at VolleyMetrics have been analyzing matches and trying to find a skill or stat that is highly correlated to winning a match. We’ve analyzed attacking efficiency, side out percentage, and many others, but they have finally found the highest correlation: serving. Serving is one of the most basic skills in volleyball. Every point begins with a serve, and teams can get a big …
