Match of the Week: Ohio State vs. Penn State

Last week, Ohio State pulled the upset in their victory over Long Beach State. After losing the third set 25-15 to go down two sets to one, they won the next two on their way to victory. After beating the highest ranked MPSF team last week, they now set their sights on the highest ranked EIVA team, Penn State. Penn State took the week off this past week after losses to UCI and Long Beach State. Before those matches, they had been on an eleven game win streak. You can see how to two teams compare on the VMRI below.

A more visual comparison of each team’s fundamentals can be seen in the image to the right. Ohio State has gone 16-1 in the last 17 matches. Ranked fourth in the AVCA Coaches Poll and fourth in the VMRI, Ohio State’s only losses have come to McMaster, UCLA, and Ball State. Ohio State players have also garnered much attention receiving numerous awards including Miles Davis’ reception of the AVCA Player of the week on February 16th.

Penn State is sixth in the AVCA Coaches Poll. Ranked ninth in the VMRI, Penn State has played well through parts of the season so far, but have struggled in some big games. They look forward to this inter-conference match up at home. Penn State has also received the AVCA Player of the Week honors on January 26 when Chris Nugent was chosen. Chris Nugent was also chosen and the VolleyMetrics player of the week that week.
Hopefully this match is as exciting as it appears it will be. Both teams have played well this season and VolleyMetrics would like to congratulate them and wish them luck, both in this coming week and moving forward.

Analysis Shows an Increase of Serves Leads to a Higher Win Percentage

In the last few weeks, our statisticians at VolleyMetrics have been analyzing matches and trying to find a skill or stat that is highly correlated to winning a match. We’ve analyzed attacking efficiency, side out percentage, and many others, but they have finally found the highest correlation: serving. Serving is one of the most basic skills in volleyball. Every point begins with a serve, and teams can get a big …
