Match of the Week: Long Beach State vs. Ohio State

For the last two weeks, our match of the week posts have focused on a comprehensive view of the MPSF, MIVA, and EIVA. This included an overview of 25+ matches each week with our analytical predictions on who would win. Over the past two weeks, we have predicted 45 of 52 matches correctly. This week, however, we will be returning to our normal Match of the Week format as #1 Long Beach State hosts #5 Ohio State this Saturday. You can see how these teams compare on the VolleyMetrics Rating Index (VMRI) below.

Rplot04A more visual comparison of each team’s fundamentals can be seen in the image to the right. As you can see, Long Beach and Ohio State are both highly rated teams that have played well this year. Ohio State has gone 14-1 in the last 15 matches. Ranked fifth in the AVCA Coaches Poll and fourth in the VMRI, Ohio State’s only losses have come to McMaster, UCLA, and Ball State. Ohio State players have also garnered much attention receiving numerous awards including Miles Davis’ reception of the AVCA Player of the week on February 16th.

Long Beach has been #1 in the AVCA Poll for five straight weeks while winning 11 straight matches. Their only losses this season have come to once-top-ranked BYU and UCLA. Rated second in the VMRI, just barely behind Stanford, Long Beach has played consistently well all season long while also receiving AVCA Player of the Week honors on January 19 when TJ DeFalco was chosen.

Both teams have had tremendous seasons thus far and VolleyMetrics would like to commend both teams for their skills and effort. While Long Beach appears to have the upper hand due to home court advantage and an edge in overall rating, this match will be a highlight of the week as two top-five, inter-conference teams clash in what should be a very memorable match in Long Beach.

Analysis Shows an Increase of Serves Leads to a Higher Win Percentage

In the last few weeks, our statisticians at VolleyMetrics have been analyzing matches and trying to find a skill or stat that is highly correlated to winning a match. We’ve analyzed attacking efficiency, side out percentage, and many others, but they have finally found the highest correlation: serving. Serving is one of the most basic skills in volleyball.
