This week’s match of the week consists of two teams in the top 5: #4 Long Beach State vs. #5 Hawaii. Hawaii will be traveling to Long Beach to try and extend their 5-game winning streak. Last year, Long Beach State had the upper hand, beating Hawaii 3-1 and 3-0, but Hawaii is a much better team this year. Let’s see how they compare below:

VolleyMetrics Ratings
Team Serve Pass Attack Block Dig Set Overall SOS Win %
California State, Long Beach (Men’s) 3.94 7.07 5.16 5.64 3.56 6.66 4.91 4.64 21.00%
Hawaii (Men’s) 5.39 7.74 5.34 6.74 3.93 6.49 5.05 4.49 79.00%
League Overall 4.63 6.38 4.51 5.72 3.38 5.1 4.77 4.86

From our VolleyMetrics rankings, Hawaii performs better in every skill except for setting, which they are only scored 0.17 below LBSU. As we look at the scoring graphics, we can see that Hawaii continues to dominate Long Beach State in almost every category. Hawaii has an incredibly high SO% at 74.2%. They also force their opponents to commit a lot of errors and score 30% of their points this way. Long Beach State offensively performs great, scoring 63% of their points from aces or kills. Hawaii is one of the better blocking teams in our ratings, so it will be interesting to see how these two teams match up this weekend.

These two teams will face off twice this week: the first time on Wednesday, and the second time on Friday. If Hawaii can steal both of these matches on the road, this would shake up the Top 5 rankings, as well as the early MPSF standings. Be sure to watch these matches, and continue to read the blog for more match ups of the week.
