This week’s match of the week features two of the best teams in men’s volleyball right now: #1 Ohio State and #4 Long Beach State. Last week, Long Beach State blew past Hawaii in two matches (3-2,3-0), and proved to be on of the best teams in the country, but this will be their biggest match up of the year as they face #1 Ohio State, the only undefeated team in the top 15 AVCA rankings. Ohio State currently sits at 6-0, and are 5-0 against ranked opponents. They have only dropped 2 sets in their first 6 matches of the season, one of which coming from a 3-1 victory over UCLA, the #2 team in the country. Let’s see how these two teams compare in our ratings and offensive statistics:

VolleyMetrics Ratings
Team Serve Pass Attack Block Dig Set Overall SOS Win %
Ohio State 2.81 7.52 5.51 6.09 4 4.87 5.1 5.04 69.03%
Long Beach 3.58 7.52 5.5 5.66 3.76 6.84 4.96 4.78 30.97%
League Overall 3.86 7.09 4.84 5.79 3.78 5.62 4.91 4.93

As we look at the rating comparison for these two teams, we see a lot of similarities. Both teams have almost the exact same pass and attack ratings. Both teams are currently Top 5 in attack ratings, as well as top 3 in passing. Long beach has the advantage in serving and setting, but in our overall ratings, serving and setting do not have that big of an impact in the outcome of a match as the other skills do. Ohio State performs much better at blocking and digging than Long Beach State, and they perform better than the league average in every skill category.

Because of these factors previously mentioned, our predictions have Ohio State defeating Long Beach State with a win percentage of 69.03% to 30.97%. Ohio State also has the home court advantage, which plays a big part of our Match of the Week predictions. Below, we have a more in depth graphical comparison of each team. You can see each team’s points breakdown and scoring comparison below:

It is very interesting to see how similar these two teams are. The are almost identical in their scoring summary. As far as their points breakdown, Long Beach State has the slight advantage in each category. Both teams are two of the top offenses in the country. It will be great to see if Long Beach State can escape Columbus with a win, or if Ohio State will continue their early season dominance and remain undefeated.
